Journal Databases
Journal databases allow you to search for published research articles.
These databases index copious amounts of published literature so that you
may search their contents and extract those articles that are of interest to
you. This tutorial focuses on those databases whose material is available
without cost, but additional databases that categorize much more information
are also available for purchase. Contacting a local librarian in either the public or academic fields can be
highly advantageous to your search as they may be able to direct you to
additional resources through their institutional affiliations.
Effective methods of searching vary from database to database. Many databases use their own thesaurus terms. Some use natural language keywords to retrieve articles for you. In
either case, investigating how these databases are retrieving the articles
will likely make your search more effective and accurate. Additional information can be found in the Search for Answers section of
the Searching the Public Health Literature tutorial.
