Formulas and FunctionsCreate a separate worksheet for calculationsTo preserve the raw data, copy your data onto a new worksheet and then apply the calculations and analysis to the copy. One advantage of working within a spreadsheet environment is being able to perform calculations directly with the recorded data. Data analysis can be mathematical, financial, statistical, etc. Excel provides a large number of pre-defined formulas called “functions”. Some of the more common functions include SUM, AVERAGE, and COUNT. Excel recognizes the use of basic mathematical (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) statements or formulas, as well as the pre-defined functions, with the use of a leading equal sign “=”. For example “=5+4”. The answer [1] is displayed in the cell, while formula [2] is displayed in the Formula Bar.
