UM SPH Department of Environmental Health Sciences announces winners of first annual photo contest.

ANN ARBOR, Mich.Winners have been chosen for the 2007-2008 photo contest in the Department of Environmental Health Sciences at the University of Michigan School of Public Health. The contest garnered dozens of submissions from 20 participants.

"The winners were selected by vote of the faculty, and all of the photos were greatly appreciated and enjoyed, whether or not they were selected," said department chair Howard Hu. "The winning photos and captions will be used as part of our planned improvements to the aesthetics of our wall and corridor space as well as our web pages. Congratulations to the winners and we look forward to the next photo contest!"

2007-2008 EHS Top 3 Photos

The $250 first prize goes to Katie Bush, EHS doctoral student, for: “Yongli Zhang, M.Sc., Visiting Scholar, pouring agar into culture plates arranged in pyramids.”

The $100 second prize goes to Luis Rivera, EHS doctoral student, for “Argon plasma hitting a nickel cone-from our Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry instrument, which is used to measure over 30 trace metals in environmental samples.”

The $100 third prize goes to Matt Kettmann, EHS M.P.H. student, for “Students work in level B Hazmat suits at a HAZWOPER training course in New Jersey.”

Honorable Mention Photos

student in lavHonorable mention went to David Cantonwine, EHS doctoral student, for “Lauren Tetz, an EHS doctoral student, works on a research project investigating the mechanisms of preterm delivery and environmental exposures to phthalates.”

bed netsHonorable mention also went to EHS Professor Stuart Batterman for “Here I'm helping to load 100 mosquito bed nets into a taxi in Zaria City in northern Nigeria in the summer of 2007. The bed nets are destined for the use of mothers and young children in a project aimed at improving health education and reducing environmental health risks, including malaria.”
