SPH receives seven-year accreditation renewal to December 2019

November 30, 2012

The School of Public Health has recently been notified by the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) Board of Councilors that SPH was granted re-accreditation for seven years, the maximum period of renewal. The renewal extends the School's accreditation to December 2019.

CEPH is the nationally-recognized accrediting body for both schools of public health and for public health programs. Its work ensures that accredited institutions meet the standards of education in public health disciplines, making sure that our curriculum is excellent and that our graduates have the competencies and experiences to become successful public health professionals.

U-M SPH has been continuously accredited since 1946, and is among the first cohort of 10 schools to earn accreditation at that time.

"The School's reaccreditation is excellent news and truly represents a team effort," says Nancy Janz, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. "The CEPH steering committee led the way, chaired by Richard Hirth, associate chair of HMP. The committee worked for more than 18 months preparing the required self-study report, organizing the CEPH site visit, and preparing a response document to address any concerns raised by the site visit team.

"Many faculty, staff, and students were involved in various stages of this process and helped us achieve our goal of continued full accreditation."

Why does accreditation matter? This resource from the Association of Schools of Public Health enumerates the benefits of attending an accredited school: The Value of Attending a CEPH-Accredited School of Public Health.
