Journal of Pediatrics, June 2004: Professor of Health Management & Policy Gary Freed led the research advisory committee of the American Board of Pediatrics reporting that a marked increase in the number of pediatricians relative to the number of children has been accompanied by a furthering of their uneven distribution across the nation. American College of Chest Physicians Network, May 2004: UM SPH Dean Noreen Clark explains how an asthma intervention program in Detroit schools resulted in improved student grades and decreased absences. University Record, April 5, 2004: Culinary expert Graham Kerr speaks at the Michigan School of Public Health about combating obesity and improving well-being with a variey of lifestyle changes. Parade Magazine, March 21, 2004: Includes UM SPH's Hunein "John" Massaab, who developed FluMist vaccine, in an article about "quiet hero" superstars of health research. Environmental Health Perspectives, March 2004: Article highlights links between industrialization, urbanization, and infant health in U.S.-Mexico border towns, as studied by UM SPH Associate Professor of Epidemiology Siobán Harlow and colleagues. In 2003, Harlow and Stuart Batterman, UM SPH professor of environmental health sciences, were among 11 recipients of the first-ever Health, Environment, and Economic Development (HEED) program grants from the NIH's John E. Fogarty International Center (FIC). USA Today, January 21, 2004: The new avian flu was discussed at UM SPH's International SARS Symposium, and experts warn that the bird virus could mutate into pandemic flu.
