On Thursday, May 16 2002, Dean Clark awarded Excellence in Staff Service Awards to four outstanding SPH staff members during a reception at Stockwell Hall. This year's award recipients are as follows: Susan A. Crawford Sue provides outstanding service and support to students and faculty in the Department of Environmental Health Sciences. Described as one of the brightest and most dedicated staff persons at the University and anywhere, she is credited as having “near encyclopedic knowledge of the Department programs and students over the last 20 years.” Sue has been a key member of her department since she started working for the School in 1978, and has grown professionally since that time. Faculty write that she approaches her job with a zeal and thoroughness that is truly rare among staff members. She is willing to put in the extra time, effort, and energy in order to get jobs done consistently and without prompting. Sue is described as efficient, exceptionally competent, and very hardworking, and is a team player who is liked and respected by staff, students, and faculty alike. In addition to her outstanding level of professional performance, Sue’s interactions with everyone are so exceptionally congenial that she has become not only a most highly-valued colleague, but also a great friend to all of us. Sue’s job can be defined as an ombudperson for the students. The Department of Environmental Health Sciences and the School recognize her professionalism and tireless devotion, making her a very deserving recipient of this year’s
Shanta T. Layton Shanta joined the School and Department of Epidemiology in 1999, taking over the student services functions for that department. “See Shanta about that” is a standard expression used by faculty advisors to their students when procedural issues arise. Students greatly value all that she has done for them, including implementing a peer-mentoring program, assisting with the myriad of forms and procedures that students must navigate, notifying them of problems with their schedules, and assisting with the transition to graduate school before the students arrive. Faculty regard Shanta as one of the most conscientious, effective, and productive staff members with whom they have had the pleasure to work with. She is amazingly adept at the diversity of tasks she is charged with. Her organizational skills are excellent. Her personal exchanges with students and faculty are polished, warm, and genuine. The Department of Epidemiology and the
Maria Anita Salinas Research Associate II, Social Science Inspiring, excellent, and perfection are words commonly used to describe Maria’s value to the School, the Community Action Against Asthma project, and the communities where she makes such a difference in people’s lives. Maria joined the school as the Recruitment Coordinator for Community Action Against Asthma in 1999, but was quickly promoted to Field Supervisor. Colleagues are quick to express how adept Maria is at managing a multiplicity of responsibilities, and how she consistently displays incredible initiative. “She has an incredible ability to pull together people from different communities to work together towards a common goal… She is tireless in her efforts and continually thinking of better ways to carry out the work of the project.” She bridges the distance between research and communities involving real people. Maria is truly a champion of community-based public health and she has made both a marked impact and a substantial contribution to the pubic health area. The School is delighted that she will be recognized as a recipient of the School’s Recognizing Excellence in Staff Service Award.
Dinah R. Stokes Academic Secretary IV Biostatistics Dinah's outstanding skills were immediately recognized when she joined the Department of Biostatistics in 1999. As noted in her personal mission statement, she strives to achieve being the most effective and efficient support person to the faculty, students and staff that she can be, learning and sharing new skills, and accepting responsibilities for the value of the department. To ensure that she excels in her job, she finds the resources she needs by asking questions, calling appropriate people for information, and using her own creativity to ensure the quality of her work is top-notch. Dinah is a multi-tasker, a time manager, and is eager to learn new things, from computer software to policy and procedures in order to realize her ability and vision of being the best support person she can be. Her work with the department seminar committee is touted as essential. She is organized and committed to taking care of the smallest of details for the benefit of the faculty.
