Although it’s impossible to go from Arizona to Spain by bike, bus, or on foot, a team of School of Public Health commuters logged the equivalent number of miles—5,284—last May in the Ann Arbor Chamber of Commerce’s first annual “Curb Your Car Month” Commuter Challenge. Organizers say that effort was good for more than 180 hours of exercise for SPH team members, as well as 5,080 pounds avoided in emissions of carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas created by the combustion of fossil fuels. The school’s 46-member team—which included faculty, staff, students, and Dean Ken Warner—turned in more non-automotive miles than all but three of the more than 50 local teams who took part in the challenge. Collectively, participating commuters in Ann Arbor logged a total of 81,298 alternative transportation miles (mainly by walking, biking, and taking public buses) during May 2005—*equal to the distance of three trips around the earth.
