The University of Michigan Detroit Community–Academic Urban Research Center (URC) was a finalist for the 2005 Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Partnership Award for Campus-Community Collaboration. Established as a tribute to the lifelong efforts of Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter to build and strengthen safe, healthy, and caring communities throughout the world, the award honors exemplary collaborations undertaken by colleges or universities in partnership with community groups—collaborations that address critical areas of public need. The URC is a collaborative partnership involving the University of Michigan schools of Public Health, Nursing, and Social Work; the Detroit Department of Health and Wellness Promotion; nine community-based organizations; and the Henry Ford Health System.

Barbara Israel, professor of health behavior and health education and principal investigator of the URC, says the center’s work is motivated both “by the desire to build upon the strengths of and to meet the needs of communities in Detroit, and to contribute to an enhanced understanding of public health issues. Being honored in this way reminds us of the larger contributions that our partnerships have made to the field of public health.”
