During her internship last summer with the Child in Need Institute south of Kolkata (Calcutta), India, photo-journalist and second-year M.P.H. candidate Sheila Krishnan logged more than 2,000 pictures of villagers in West Bengal.

Krishnan spent most of the summer helping young people from rural communities document local needs that affect adolescent health. She was struck by “how passionate and vocal they were about things important to their lives,” and says it was gratifying to have “their ideas teach me.”

As a photojournalist, she’s interested in the impact of art—including photography—on community development, and in the influence of visual images on public opinion.

Krishnan was one of nearly 150 SPH students to complete internships last summer. Some worked as close to home as downtown Ann Arbor, others as far away as Kenya, Peru, and Vietnam.
