In 1961, John F. Kennedy called for the creation of a new agency aimed at overcoming global poverty, hunger, illness, and injustice. Having seen the ruins of war in Europe—and the Marshall Plan’s success in helping to rebuild the continent—Kennedy argued that the goal of advancing opportunity and freedom to the world’s people was central to America’s domestic security, comparative prosperity, and national conscience. The agency that sprang from his call—the United States Agency for International Development—celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.
