The GAP Mini-Grant program is highly competitive. Selection criteria include:

  • the applicant's interest in a career in the development, management, and/or evaluation of international family planning, integrated family planning/reproductive health, or population-environment programs as demonstrated by relevant coursework, paid or volunteer work experience, and answers to the application questionnaire;
  • the applicant's academic excellence;
  • the applicant's background and/or experience are under-represented in the field;
  • the relevance of the proposed internship to a career in the field;
  • the internship's fit with the Fellows Programs' mission;
  • the host agency's ability to provide a solid internship experience
  • the potential of the internship to involve a new community or faith-based organization in the field; and
  • the host organization and internship scope of work are consistent with USAID strategic priorities.

Please note that priority is given to applications in which the internship is part of a well-integrated program of study, i.e., (1) where the internship is a formal requirement of the applicant's degree program, (2) where the applicant's coursework and the proposed internship work well together to prepare the applicant for a career in the field, or (3) where the applicant will return to the graduate program after the internship.
