Organizations are frequently motivated to host MSI interns by the Initiative’s important aims. However, the contributions these interns can make during their few months on the job are significant in their own right. The following are the types of activities in which interns have most frequently been involved:

  • helping to organize special events, such as visits to model family planning sites, health fairs, method launches, even major international workshops;
  • community education and reproductive health mobilization activities;
  • drafting fact sheets, talking points, and presentations on specific family planning and reproductive health topics;
  • conducting background research for policy papers or project proposals;
  • developing brochures, Web pages, and radio spots;
  • translating training and educational materials;
  • helping to field-test research instruments, conduct focus groups, and compile needs assessment data;
  • developing databases of potential funders or partner organizations;
  • coordinating volunteer recruitment and training efforts; and
  • compiling best practices in a particular focus area, presenting results to staff, and identifying how the organization might incorporate these practices into existing programs.

Interns can, of course, be involved in a wide range of activities. The main criteria are that these activities be manageable in a three-month timeframe, be appropriate for the intern’s level of preparation, and provide exposure to key issues in international family planning or population-environment.
