Welcome to the Professional Exchange for Applied Knowledge (PEAK) Initiative. Part of the Population Fellows Programs since 2000, PEAK has allowed us to apply our 20 years of capacity building experience directly to reproductive health professionals and organizations in the developing world.

Funded by the Compton Foundation, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, the United Nations Foundation, and USAID, the PEAK Initiative has three mutually reinforcing parts:

PEAK Fellowship Placement: This is the centerpiece of PEAK. Each placement provides customized training for a family planning/reproductive health professional from Latin America or sub-Saharan Africa. This individual (the PEAK Fellow) spends two to four months developing the knowledge and skills needed to achieve important goals at his or her home organization. Training may be in the form of a professional internship with a leading regional or international organization, coursework, or both.

The Applied Project: Upon completion of the training period, the PEAK Fellow returns to his or her home organization to implement an applied project. This project, which is partially funded through a PEAK seed grant, is designed to meet organizational objectives while using the fellow's new skills.

The PEAK Initiative helps professionals and organizations from Latin America and sub-Saharan Africa build their capacity in family planning and reproductive health-related programming.

The program alternates regions each year. For example: The 2004 fellowships focused on sub-Saharan Africa; 2005 fellowships, on Latin America.

PEAK Fellows are early- to mid-career staff members with the potential to contribute to their organization’s long-term success.

The fellowship features two to four months of off-site training for the PEAK Fellow, followed by an applied project at his or her “home” organization that uses the fellow's new skills and is partially funded by PEAK.

Other benefits include group workshops for strategic planning and information sharing.

Group Workshops: The final component of PEAK consists of a variety of pre- and post-fellowship workshops for fellows and, in the early stages, their supervisors. These sessions are designed to improve strategic planning, foster regional collaboration, explore technical topics, and develop information-sharing networks among participants.
