Ask a Librarian Anything!E-Reserves

E-Reserves (Electronic Reserves) is a service provided to SPH Faculty and Students, and constitutes the provision of electronic versions of required course readings, made available online via the UM resource, CTools.

What are Electronic Reserves?

Electronic Reserves, or E-Reserves, are full-text course readings made available to students by the Public Health Library & Informatics upon the request of an instructor. Students can view, print, or save these readings from any computer that has Internet access and printing capabilities.

What are the advantages of using E-Reserves?

The advantages of E-Reserves are that:

  • They are available anytime
  • They are available through multiple access points both on- and off-campus
  • Their quality doesn't decrease with use
  • Many people can access the same document at the same time
  • They are free

Who can use E-Reserves?

Access to E-Reserves is available to SPH faculty and students registered for classes that offer materials through E-Reserves. Access to E-Reserves must meet copyright considerations outlined by the Fair Use Guidelines in Title 17 of the US Code (See the Copyright section below for more details)

Part I: Copyright

The Public Health Library and Informatics Division places great importance on respecting copyright. The University Library is currently working to create a unified copyright policy for all campus libraries. While the new copyright policy and procedures are being established, the library will be adhering to the following guidelines for what materials can be accepted:

  • Instructor-created materials, such as a syllabus, lecture notes, and PowerPoint slides
  • Journal articles
  • Less than 35% of a book which is currently in print
  • Chapters from books which are out of print
  • Less than 35% of non-print works
  • Non-copyrighted materials including U.S. Government Documents

Materials that do not meet these criteria will automatically be placed on the library's print reserves to be made available for check-out at the Library's Circulation Desk.

Part II: Submission Procedures

In order to ensure that materials are up and ready by the first day of class, we need all items at least one month before the start of the semester for which the readings will be use.
Return the completed E-Reserves Submission Guidelines form to the Library's Circulation Desk (M2030 SPH II) along with:

  1. A complete list of all E-Reserves materials in bibliographic format (Author, Title, Publisher, Year of Publication). A syllabus may fulfill this requirement if it includes complete bibliographic information.
  2. If the materials have not been used for E-Reserves in the past, please submit either:
    1. Clean, legible, one-sided copies, or
    2. PDF files by email or on disk, CD, or the E-Reserves Drop Box at N:\PHISA\PUBLIC\Dropbox, placed in a folder labeled with the course number. Please label each file with the first author's last name and the initial words of the title.

For example: Astin. Mind-Body Medicine.pdf
Eisenberg. Trends in Alternative Medicine.pdf

  1. If the materials have been used for E-Reserves in the past, simply tell us the term and year.

If you are having trouble locating materials or if you have any other questions regarding E-Reserves services, please contact PHLI’s E-Reserves staff at phli@umich.edu for assistance.
