Public Health Library & Informatics Journals/Serials Cancellations, 2006

During the past few years, Public Health Library & Informatics (PHLI) has experienced an 8 to 10% annual inflation rate for its serial subscriptions without an increase to its collection budget. Due to this budget constriction, the library must now reduce its subscription expenditures by at least $35,000 to cover next year's anticipated inflationary increases.

To address this budgetary situation, PHLI librarians have started to convert the library's journal subscriptions to electronic-only. The library will only purchase print subscriptions for a core set of public health journals. For the cancelled print journals, access to the print volumes will cease as of 2007.

Cancelled Print Journal Subscriptions (available electronically only)

Cancelled Journal and Database Subscriptions (no longer available at UM)

We appreciate the feedback we received about this significant change in our library's collection policy. The library wants to maintain a collection that meets the current research and instruction needs of Public Health students, staff, and faculty. Please share your comments via email (phli@umich.edu) with Helen Look, PHLI Collection Management Coordinator.

Public Health Library & Informatics Journals/Serials Cancellations, 2004

The University Library, in spite of strong campus support and stewardship, estimates a loss of $1.1 million in buying power in the coming fiscal year. Even though we did an extensive journals/serials review and cancellation last year in anticipation of this year's collection budget constraints, there are a few titles that we will be canceling this year in order to support the campus-wide effort to reduce duplication with other libraries. Most of these titles will still be available electronically and in print in one designated library on campus. See below for the list of Public Health journals/serials cancellations, the statement on the collection budget from the University Librarian, and the list of potential cancellations at Taubman Medical Library and Dentistry Library.

Public Health Journals Cancellations (Note: one print copy and electronic access will still be available on campus)

  • Applied and Environmental Microbiology
  • Community Mental Health Journal
  • Human Organization
  • Journal of Pain and Palliative Care Pharmacotherapy
  • Journal of Virology
  • Nature Genetics
  • Patty's Toxicology Online
  • Patty's Industrial Hygiene Online
  • State Health Notes (currently received only as email updates; no print or electronic access is available)

We are adding one new journal title, EcoHealth, and restoring print and electronic access to two titles, Journal of Occupational & Environmental Hygiene and Occupational & Environmental Medicine.

Public Health Library Journals/Serials Review, 2003

The University Library is experiencing a period of no increases in the collection budget which results in no inflationary increases to cover journals/serials subscription costs. On average, journals/serials subscriptions represent approximately 85% of our collection budget, and typically there is a 6-8% annual inflationary increase in the subscription costs. In order to manage our collection budget, we have conducted an extensive journals/serials review during the past year to identify potential titles for cancellation. The review included duplicate and low-use titles, selected electronic journals, cd-rom online subscriptions, standing Reference orders, indexes, and legislative materials. In making decisions during the review process, we tried to ensure that most of the resources on the resulting cancellations list would continue to be available either electronically or at other campus libraries or both.

At the same time, we have continued to receive recommendations from the SPH and campus community on new titles to consider adding to our collection. We have received more recommended titles than we will be able to order. The savings from the proposed cancellations will be used to cover inflationary increases and to balance overall collection expenditures.

Final cancellations and additions as well as original documentation can be viewed at the links below:
