Staff Notes

Nancy Allee has been appointed by incoming Medical Library Association (MLA) President Jean Shipman to serve a three-year term on the MLA Governmental Relations Committee.  The committee's charge is to: "develop and promulgate a consistent association position on information policy issues, particularly those relevant to medical libraries and librarianship, and on governmental actions affecting medical libraries."

Nancy Allee recently partnered with a health educator, Lisa Fockler, to give a CDCynergy
presentation at the Great Lakes Chapter – Society for Public Health Education (GLC-SOPHE) Spring Conference on Leadership and Communication in Public Health on April 27.  Lisa and Nancy are both designated trainers for National SOPHE on CDCynergy, a health communication planning tool.  The GLC-SOPHE conference was sponsored by the Michigan Public Health Training Center and the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe of Michigan, Behavioral Health Programs.

Patty Bradley taught three workshops during Enriching Scholarship 2006:
Introduction to Hypertext Markup:  In this hands-on workshop you will learn methods for structuring your web pages with X/HTML elements to comply with current web standards.
Introduction to Cascading Style Sheets (CSS):  In this hands-on workshop you will learn how Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) work, how to use CSS properties to format web pages, how to apply CSS styles to an entire website, how to validate your CSS, and much more.
Designing Accessible Websites: This workshop will introduce you to the issues faced by persons with disabilities, accessibility standards, and the techniques necessary to make sites accessible.

Librarians from PHLI (including Helen Look, Alison Grodzinski, and Theresa Arndt), Taubman Medical Library and the Dentistry Library staffed a booth on library services and resources at the 2nd Annual Cultural Competency Exchange hosted by the UMHS Program for Multicultural Health on April 25. The group will also present a poster detailing the libraries' cultural competency support activities at the 2006 Medical Library Association Annual Meeting in Phoenix, AZ in May.

Gillian Mayman taught a workshop entitled: “Searching for Evidence: Finding Information to Support Evidence-Based Public Health” at the 15th Annual Information Integration Conference sponsored by the Michigan Association for Local Public Health in East Lansing on March 21.

Jean Song was appointed to the University Library Instructor’s College steering committee for 2005-2007.
