New Web Statistics Software
PHLI used a package called Webtrends to track website usage from 2002 through 2005. In January 2006, we switched to a package called AWStats
AWStats reports are available for 2004 through the present via the SPH Intranet. AWStats offers the following advantages:
- It runs automatically on the web server, updating usage reports in real time with no administrator action needed.
- It provides more data on website usage including:
- complete lists of pages visited, referring sites, and search engines and search phrases used
- an updated list of the various web browsers and operating systems that visitors are using
- how many users bookmarked a page in the site
- It does a better job of filtering out bogus hits.
- Statistics for the same website for different months and years can be compared in the same report.
- Statistics for sites with sections in two different locations can be viewed in the same report.
- It can count hits to dynamically generated pages such as most-viewed faculty profiles, most-viewed "experts" keywords and most-viewed student resumes.
- It uses tool tips to define terms.
- It is free and open-source.
The AWStats reports contain valuable information on website usage for nearly all websites hosted at SPH, including:
- Number of unique visitors each month
- How long visitors stayed on our site
- What pages visitors viewed
- What countries our website visitors are in
- What operating systems and web browsers our visitors use
- Referring sites
- Referring search engines
- Search terms used to find our site
