Community Engagement

This module will begin with a discussion of key health issues and health disparities that affect communities. It will introduce participants to the history of health research, how research is conducted, how to assess the risks and benefits of participating in research, safeguards for research participants, and how the results of research can be used to improve community health. The second part of this training will provide community partners with knowledge and skills for developing effective and equitable research partnerships.

Day Two (October 1, 2009)

Location: Dort Oak Park Neighborhood House

Interactive discussion of Community Based Research. Topics include:
  • History of community-academic partnerships in Flint and Introduction to CBPR
  • Definition & Types of Research,
  • Role of community in research,Challenges to research partnership
  • Research Protections
  • Core components of effective partnerships

Day Three (October 2, 2009)
Time: 8:30am-noon
Location: Dort Oak Park Neighborhood House

Hands on and Follow up to first day discussions. Will include discussion of core components of a research partnership, hands-on activities, and future directions.

Working Lunch with Researcher Engagement Module participants (October 9, 2009)
Time: 11am-1pm (Lunch provided)
Location: TBD

Participants from both modules will have the opportunity to explore issues relating to community based participatory research and discuss potential partnership opportunities.
