At the University of Michigan site, we have a flexible system of mentoring. The program relies on a Steering Committee and Core Faculty to provide the foundation for mentoring. Scholars, however, have access to faculty in the School of Public Health, social science departments, the Medical School and other units across campus as appropriate. The Steering Committee includes, among others, one member from each discipline who serves as a contact person for the Scholars from that discipline and the home department. This committee helps with the selection of Scholars and meets with them several times over the course of the program to discuss their research ideas and projects. The Core Faculty is a group of faculty that includes members from each disciplinary department who attend the bi-weekly seminars and serve as additional program resources for Scholars. These faculty members, as well as the program director, make appropriate connections and introductions as desired by the Scholars. Over the course of the program, over 70 faculty members from across campus have participated in one way or another with the Scholars program. Many Scholars receive mentoring in the form substantive research advice and job market assistance while pursuing their own research agenda. In other cases, Scholars have had faculty co-authors on their publications. Scholars also rely on fellow Scholars for advice and guidance, and in many cases Scholars work on exciting projects together. Several notable publications have been co-authored by two or more Scholars (within and across program sites).
