At the University of Michigan (in Ann Arbor), the Scholars program is housed in the Department of Health Management and Policy, in the School of Public Health. The program has close ties to the departments of economics, political science and sociology, as well as strong connections to other relevant units and faculty on campus such as the School of Public Policy, the Institute for Social Research, and the Medical School. Over 70 faculty from around campus have participated in some aspect of the program since its inception in 1994.

Each Scholar is provided with significant resources to support his/her research. This includes a private office, computing resources, access to graduate student research assistants, secretarial support, and a budget for research support. Scholars are integrated into the University of Michigan community as colleagues, participating and presenting in the many relevant seminars on campus.

The program is directed by Paula Lantz. A Steering Committee, which includes the director, a faculty member from each of three disciplines, and a physician faculty member from the Medical School, assists in the leadership of the program. Steering Committee members help select Scholars, and also provide mentoring and assistance to Scholars while in the program. Additional faculty assist the program by providing strong linkages between their departments and the Scholars, and by providing mentorship to the scholars.
