Webinar: Communication Research

<dc:subject>
Communication research has moved beyond the development of educational materials to examinations of the factors involved in communicating complex risk, how information is received, the role of media in (mis)characterizing scientific news, and the social and behavioral aspects of trust and trusted sources of information. In public health settings, communication research also can touch upon disparities in risk communication based on literacy and primary language, variance in risk information seeking and processing based on cultural and occupational contexts, and the characterization of uncertainty such as in hazard mapping of public health risks. Communication research can begin to answer questions about specific audience/cultural needs around communicating risk and/or provide more insight into how information is received, understood, and applied. Presentations: "The Need for Research Evaluating the Effectiveness of Health Communications Programs" Gary Kreps, PhD, George Mason University "Introducing MIYO: A Practical Tool for Health Communication to Diverse Audiences" Matthew Kreuter, PhD, Washington University in St. Louis Making Environmental Exposure Information Meaningful Brian Zikmund-Fisher, PhD, University of Michigan School of Public Health Registration required: http://bit.ly/PEPH_COMM
</dc:subject>

Webinar: Engaging Primary Care Physicians in Quality Improvement: Lessons From a Statewide Payer-Provider Partnership

<dc:subject>
In this webinar, Christy Lemak will describe results from her Commonwealth Fund-supported evaluation of the Physician Group Incentive Program - a statewide pay-for-performance initiative. A team of UM HMP researchers investigated physicians' and other program stakeholders' perceptions of the program through semi-structured interviews with over 80 individuals and found that activities across five areas contribute to successful provider engagement. This webinar will highlight effective strategies for engaging primary care physicians in program design and implementation processes and creating learning communities to support quality improvement and practice change.
</dc:subject>

Summer Workshop on Integrated Data Analysis for Addiction Research

<dc:subject>
The National Addiction & HIV Data Archive Program (NAHDAP) is holding a 3-day workshop in Ann Arbor on Integrated Data Analysis for addiction researchers.

Integrated data analysis (IDA) allows for the pooling of separate data sets to create larger, more heterogeneous data sets that can be used to test hypotheses, despite differences across studies in populations, study design, and measurement. Unlike data harmonization which requires identical measures across datasets, IDA allows for the development of measures that are psychometrically equivalent across data sets. This training workshop will use lectures and hands-on training.

Deadline: Deadline for application is June 1, 2013.

Fee: There are no tuition fees for accepted participants.

Application: Admission to this workshop is competitive. Enrollment is limited to 25 participants. Get more information about the workshop and apply using the ICPSR Summer Program portal at http://www.icpsr.umich.edu/sumprog/courses/0168.

NAHDAP is sponsored by the National Institute on Drug Abuse. This workshop is offered through the ICPSR Summer Program.
</dc:subject>

2013 Risk Science Center Bernstein Symposium: Why Is It Hard To Pivot Based on Science?

<dc:subject>
The University of Michigan Risk Science Center will host the 2013 Bernstein symposium titled, "Why Is It Hard To Pivot Based on Science?"

The symposium will take place on September 26, 2013 at Palmer Commons, on the campus of the University of Michigan.

Why is it so difficult for leaders to pivot their position based on science? What are the challenges, dangers, and opportunities of being willing (or unwilling) to move with scientific evidence?

Mark Lynas will provide the featured presentation in an afternoon public lecture, followed by a panel discussion. Mark is a frequent international speaker on science and policy and is the author of The God Species: How the Planet Can Survive the Age of Humans. Lynas pivoted dramatically and publicly, reversing his position on biotechnology and food.

Mark will share his experience of pivoting based on science, and a panel of responders will explore a range of high profile issues like climate change, hydrofracking, and genetically modified foods.
</dc:subject>
