Why did you choose the University of Michigan School of Public Health?

I chose UM SPH given its strong academic reputation and its partnerships with the UM Medical School and broader Health System.

What do you feel is currently the most important public health issue?

The most important public health issues are those that are lifestyle-preventable chronic conditions such as obesity and tobacco addiction. Chronic disease in this country continues to increase in prevalence and accounts for an increasingly large portion of our nation's health care costs.

Describe your job. What is a typical day like?

My job involves the formulation, analysis, and implementation of public health policy in areas of emerging public health and science. A typical day consists of a range of meetings - comprising policy and administrative/management areas as well as time for research and analysis of public health policy considerations.

What are the rewards/challenges of working in government?

The rewards of working in the government include the ability to make a difference from a broad population perspective and to have the opportunity to truly serve the public.

The challenges include navigating through a large and complex bureaucracy while maintaining passion and enthusiasm.
