UM SPH Degree: M.P.H.1978, Health Behavior and Health Education

Why did you choose the University of Michigan School of Public Health?

I applied to UM SPH on the recommendation of my college advisor, who also graduated from the school. Additionally, I learned that the UM SPH had one of the foremost programs in health behavior/health education in the country, and I wanted to learn from the cutting-edge faculty and researchers. I also was fortunate to receive a traineeship from the Public Health Service, which helped balance my out-of-state tuition as a “starving student.”

What advice would you give to a student looking for an internship in public health?

Don’t wait until the last minute and don’t just look at the experience as something to be checked off on your course requirements. Begin talking to other students, talking with professionals in your field, and shopping websites during your first and second semester. Think about a potential location for your first job and seek an internship there. Be discriminating - your internship can be a key to future employment and professional connections that help launch your career.

Thinking back about your Michigan experience, do you have any stories (funny or unique) you could share?

There’s nothing like a football Saturday in Ann Arbor! I have many fond memories of games, potlucks, and parties with my SPH colleagues. Those are experiences and relationships that remain forever.
