Other Degree: B.S.N., Eastern Michigan University (1991)

How did your Michigan education prepare you for the responsibilities/pressures of your job?

My focus on international health at SPH helped prepare me to be an epidemiologist in a diverse, global community. In addition, Dr. Matthew Boulton's course gave me important tools for addressing day-to-day issues in a local health department.

What are some effective ways you have presented public health issues in your organization or to the community?

Communication is a critical component of epidemiology. Every month, I write an e-newsletter called "Epi Update", covering communicable disease outbreaks and issues in Washtenaw County, which is distributed within the Health Department and to local hospitals, health care providers, school nurses, and medical researchers. I frequently talk to the media regarding current outbreaks and disease prevention. In addition, I give lectures on recent disease outbreaks to area nursing and SPH students.
