Why did you choose the University of Michigan School of Public Health?
I chose UM SPH because of its excellent reputation as a graduate school in the Midwest. The quality of the professors and curriculum influenced my decision to learn from the best in the field. In addition, I had a very positive undergraduate experience at the UM School of Nursing and felt confident I would excel and receive the highest quality education in grad school as well. I also believe that the Human Nutrition program at UM SPH offers a very well rounded curriculum base having to earn credits in all departments of SPH, rather than only focusing on nutrition.
How did you decide to pursue a career in the field of public health?
I did a rotation in Community Health in my last year of nursing school, and it was the first time in my four years of nursing school that I felt a true fit, for me personally. At that time I was working with WIC, Women Infants and Children and doing home visits. I felt empowered when providing nursing and nutrition education in a home and community setting, rather than a clinical or hospital setting. I had an incredible interest in the field of nutrition, and then decided to pursue a degree in Public Health Human Nutrition.
What are some ways you stay active in the field of public health?
I am constantly "connected" via social networking sites including Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. I am always meeting new business contacts, networking and open to all opportunities that come my way. In addition, I stay current in the public health literature and journals in my field, and reading every day. I also attend conferences, lectures and meetings both locally and nationally.
What advice would you give to a student looking for an internship in public health?
My advice would be to outline your career goals first and search for internships that very closely match your professional goals and career interests. This is a significant amount of time spent in the field and you would like it to be as beneficial and practical as possible. Take your time in researching internships, be prepared for your interviews and make sure it is a good fit for both you and the employer. Also, be very clear on what your expectations are for the internship so you can maximize your experience and so your employer can provide you with all of the resources and experiences you need.
How did your Michigan education prepare you for the responsibilities/pressures of your job?
The Michigan education is one that expects excellence and has very high standards and expectations of their students. This prepared me to handle pressure and my own responsibility in a way that I do not expect any less from myself or my employees. I have maintained these high quality standards of excellence, setting the bar high for myself and my company, as well as any of my partners that I align myself with. I am constantly evaluating my business for ways to improve and grow, similar to the way the SPH is always searching for ways to make the SPH experience a better one for students and offer cutting edge education with every program, every year.
What are the rewards/challenges of starting your own business?
Starting your own business is incredibly challenging but also extremely rewarding. The rewards are that I get to primarily make all my own business decisions, with the help of my team and professional consultants. I get to make my own schedule, as well as not have an employer to report to every day. The challenges lie in that I am also more than a nutritionist as a business owner. I have to be involved in day to day operations, marketing, accounting, social media, event planning and more! I have many hats to wear, while trying to focus on what my main goal is … to excel as a leading public health nutrition expert!
