Student Goals
Interns should be reminded that the Summer Enrichment Program placement is provided as a learning opportunity and are encouraged to take full advantage of their experience. Interns are encouraged to ask questions, read additional literature and complete additional assignments as time permits. Preceptors and other personnel will be evaluating your performance at all times, therefore, always be aware of your professional mannerism. Carry yourself in a dignified, courteous and professional manner.
> Student Responsibilities for Internships
Goals of the Internship Aspect of the SEP:
To provide the student with an 8-week internship that will expose the student to the responsibilities and activities of a health administrator and also will enable the student to complete a meaningful project. Among the characteristics of the internship are the following:
- The activities and projects performed by the student should (when possible) result from discussions between the preceptor, the student and UM faculty about the student's interests and the needs of the organization.
- The student should be treated as a pre-professional and will not be asked to do clerical work.
- The student should be given a project that is 1) at the student's level of competence; 2) valuable to the institution; 3) possible to complete during the internship period.
- Students are expected to be responsible, self-directed, reliable and accurate in their work.
- The student should be exposed to a wide variety of people and sub-units of the organization to widen his/her understanding of the purpose and functioning of the organization. This exposure can result either from an organized set of meetings and interviews (such as a formal rotation through the organization) or as a by-product of the student's summer project.
- The student should be encouraged to attend meetings and work sessions that will provide additional insights into the workings of the organization.
- The student should meet regularly with the preceptor (at least once a week). The preceptor is responsible for providing sufficient structure and supervision to enable the student to develop appropriate research skills. Students are also responsible for keeping the preceptor and SEP office aware of their current telephone number.
