2008 Recipients
of the "Recognizing Excellence in Staff Service" Awards
Amy B. Brooks
Administrative Assistant Senior
Department of Epidemiology
Amy Brooks began her employment at the University of Michigan in October, 1998. She arrived at the School of Public Health in September, 2003 as the Program Coordinator for the Robert Wood Johnson Health & Society Scholars Program in Epidemiology.
Her "extraordinary ability to maneuver through red tape and road blocks with exceptional skill" and willingness to help others are talents that are appreciated by the faculty, staff and postdoctoral fellows.
Her organization of the annual on campus interview process for over 20 fellows within a 48 hour time frame is amazing. She takes into account the numerous locations across the UM campuses and allows for travel time, even in adverse weather. "The seamlessness and comprehensiveness of the interview program that Amy put together for us was an important factor in our decision to rank the UM site over its competitors." Amy's attention to detail, dependability, and ability to make all who work with her feel they have her undivided attention, are truly appreciated.
The Department of Epidemiology and School of Public Health recognize Amy's contributions and are pleased to reward her dedication, commitment and outstanding service with the Recognizing Excellence in Staff Service Award.
Dawn Reed
Administrative Assistant Intermediate
Department of Epidemiology
Dawn Reed joined the University of Michigan School of Public Health in October, 2004. She is an integral part of the Center for Molecular and Clinical Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases (MACEPID). Dawn is not only willing to learn new software and teach others but she often goes the extra mile in providing excellent service to those with whom she works. Although not part of her original job description, Dawn has on more than one occasion assisted in the laboratory. Whether it was redistributing samples when a freezer failed or collating biological specimens that had been archived 510 years ago, she goes above and beyond expectations.
The MACEPID research program was often disrupted with the renovation project over the past few years. Again, Dawn stepped up to assist with the numerous lab moves, making sure there was sufficient power where equipment was to be relocated as well as enough room for the various supplies and smaller equipment. She has worked with the faculty, movers, and installers to ensure smooth and relatively uneventful moves. Her assistance in identifying furniture to be moved from offsite locations to SPH II was extraordinary.
Dawn is a wonderful asset to the Department of Epidemiology and the School of Public Health. We are pleased to reward her loyalty and outstanding service with the Recognizing Excellence in Staff Service Award.

Everett Roberts
Research Area Specialist, Intermediate,
Health Behavior and Health Education
Everett Roberts is the manager of Youth Empowerment Solutions for Peaceful Communities (YES), a violence prevention program that involves middle school students in creating positive community change. As a result of his efforts, and those of his team, YES received an award from Keep Genesee County Beautiful, was featured in a nationally broadcast training for violence prevention practitioners, and has received extensive local media coverage. Everett's dedication to his work is exceptional. He has been instrumental in forming a group of adult volunteers to work in the school where YES is based. These volunteers are providing much needed support for teachers and mentoring for students. Everett has given many evenings and weekends to the YES program. He has wielded a hoe and paintbrush, carted mulch and water, and delivered countless snacks to hungry kids and volunteers. This sort of dedication is contagious and inspires the YES youth and adult volunteers to give their best effort to make the program a success. Everett is taking the lead on a plan to sustain YES after the research is completed. He is committed to seeing that the lessons learned from YES continue to benefit the Flint community after federal funding has ended.
Everett is a longstanding volunteer with Big Brothers, Big Sisters and is a dedicated family man. His wife, Kimberly, teaches first grade in the Flint Schools, son, Corey, is a senior at EMU,and daughter, Nickie, works for an environmental company in North Carolina.
