Many graduate students seek employment as teaching assistants or research assistants. At the University of Michigan, graduate student assistantships provide excellent opportunities to fund your graduate education. In most cases, an appointment as a graduate student assistant at a 25% appointment (10-hour work expectation per week) or higher will provide a full tuition waiver regardless of residency, a monthly stipend, and full coverage health insurance.

Graduate Student Instructor (GSI) Positions
The School of Public Health does not have an undergraduate program, which limits the number of GSI positions. However, the College of Literature, Sciences, and the Arts, and the Engineering College support large numbers of GSIs; resourceful graduate students can sometimes find GSI positions within departments across the university. Students are strongly encouraged to contact any department that teaches undergraduate students and inquire how to apply for a GSI position. Science departments may provide greater opportunities for SPH students; however, a student should contact any department in which they may have a particular strength or focus. The University of Michigan website is the best place to start when seeking GSI positions.

Graduate Student Research Assistant (GSRA) Positions
Similar to GSI positions; appointments provide tuition wavers, stipend, and health insurance. Although the School of Public Health does have some opportunities for students to conduct research, formal GSRA positions are few in number, mostly reserved for doctoral students, and typically offered to students who have been in the school for at least one year. Resourceful students can seek out GSRA positions across the university at any department that might offer opportunities for research. Individual faculty members serving as principle investigators on research projects most often offer GSRA positions. For this reason, students should attempt to identify appropriate faculty with research interests similar to their own and contact that faculty member directly. Many UM faculty publicize their research programs on web pages, which should make the Internet a valuable tool when searching for GSRA opportunities.
