Scholarships & GrantsThe School of Public Health offers a variety of scholarships and employment opportunities. In most cases, your admissions application is all that is needed for you to be considered for any aid the school has to offer incoming students. Tuition Assistance AwardsThese awards are scholarships that do not need to be repaid. The admissions committees of each department identify potential award recipients; however, the Dean's Office ultimately offers these awards to selected students. Awards may be full, half, or partial tuition. These scholarships are highly competitive and are based on academic merit and expected contribution to the field. Special ScholarshipsA limited number of named scholarships are awarded to students possessing evidence of outstanding contributions to the fields of public heath. These awards are given based upon information contained within the application for admission combined with SPH academic performance. Many of the "named scholarships" are awarded to second year M.P.H. or M.H.S.A. students who have not previously received other SPH, university or external funding support. Current SPH students need not apply, as all eligible second year students are considered for these awards. Award recipients will be notified in writing of their selection prior to the final semester of their program, when scholarships are typically awarded. Departmental ScholarshipsSome departments award a limited number of named scholarships to students possessing evidence of outstanding contributions to a specific field of study. These awards are given based upon information contained within applications for admissions, and are made at the sole discretion of the department. See the department web pages for more details. SPH Short-Term Emergency LoansThe Office of Academic Affairs in the School of Public Health administers short-term emergency loans to SPH students who find they are in need of financial assistance for an emergency that they had not planned or budgeted for. The money available for these loans comes from the generous support of SPH alumni, who remember what it was like to be a student with an unexpected financial emergency. These are loans that must be repaid in a relatively short period of time, in most cases, three months. SPH students must request consideration for a loan by submitting, in writing, the reason why an emergency loan is needed and the expected time to repay the debt to the Director of Student Services. Horace H. Rackham Graduate School FellowshipsStudents pursuing a M.S. or Ph.D. may be eligible for fellowships administered through the Office of Student Recruitment and Support of the Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies. Guidelines, nomination forms, and applications are available at the Rackham website, along with eligibility requirements and selection criteria.
