How to apply to a program at UM SPH depends upon the program being applied to. There are two main catagories of programs: professional and academic. Professional degrees include the Masters of Public Health (M.P.H.) and Masters of Health Services Administration (M.H.S.A.) and applicants follow the UM SPH process. Applications to distance learning and non-degree programs are also handled through the UM SPH process. Prospective students applying to academic degree programs, such as the Masters of Science (M.S.) and the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), do so through the Rackham Graduate School.

Each public health program, whether professional or academic, is administered by one of the SPH departments.
