The Master of Public Health (M.P.H.)

The Master of Public Health (M.P.H.) is the basic professional degree that is required by statute for public health professionals working in certain classifications in many areas and it is the oldest degree specifically identified with public health education.

Generally, the M.P.H. curriculum consists of 60 credit hours taken in four terms, i.e., two academic years. However, those with a relevant graduate degree or with a bachelor's degree and relevant work experience may be eligible for a reduction in the number of credit hours required for the degree (not including HMP department). All M.P.H. students complete core courses designed to prepare public health professionals to be knowledgeable about current and emerging health problems, and to be able to work effectively with other public health professionals, citizens in the community, and political leaders.

Completing this core requires taking coursework in: biostatistics; epidemiology; health administration planning and policy analysis; environmental health sciences; and social and behavioral science in public health. It is possible to combine any M.P.H. program with any other M.P.H. program at the School of Public Health. Joint M.P.H. programs may, however, limit the amount of time available for elective courses.

The following M.P.H. degrees are offered at UM SPH:
