- Social Determinants of Health -
"Social Determinants" refers to material and
psychosocial factors associated with health outcomes, e.g., economic inequalities,
differential access to education, lack of employment,
poor housing, racial and ethnic segregation, unequal
treatment, lack of political influence (adapted from the
World Health Organization - Social Determinants of
Health: The Solid Facts, 2nd edition and a
conceptual model on Social Determinants of Health and
Environmental Health Promotion developed by Schulz and
Northridge, 2004).
- Socio-Economic, Racial and Ethnic Disparities in
Health and Health Care
- "Health and health care disparities" refers to the
higher rates of a variety of health concerns experienced
by racial and ethnic minorities, in, for example, life
expectancy, overall health, infant mortality rates,
cancer, HIV/AIDS, violence, diabetes, access to health
care (from the American Public Health Association
website - Fact Sheet on Racial/Ethnic Disparities,
www.apha.org).
- Built Environment
- "Built Environments" refers to those aspects of
the environment that are human modified, e.g., homes,
schools, workplaces, parks, industrial areas, roads and
highways. Challenges related to the built
environment pertain to transportation, urban sprawl, air
pollution, city planning and diminishing natural
resources (from the National Institute of Environmental
Health Sciences website -
www.niehs.nih.gov).
