About Us >> Overview

The mission of the Flint's Youth Violence Prevention Center is to develop, implement, and monitor comprehensive strategies that help prevent youth violence and promote healthy development through collaboration among community, university and health department partners in ways that focus on interdisciplinary, ecologically and culturally relevant, and community-based approaches. The Center has 3 distinct cores, Intervention, Training and Evaluation, guided by the community-based Steering Committee. It maintains a collaborative relationship with the Prevention Research Center of Michigan, which provides access to additional resources and partnerships.

The specific goals and objectives of the Center are to work with the Flint community to: 1) build the scientific infrastructure to support the development of a community-wide youth violence prevention strategy; 2) promote interdisciplinary approaches that foster collaboration among university, community-based organizations (CBOs), and state and local health departments; 3) institutionalize violence prevention training; and 4) develop an evaluation plan and surveillance system to monitor progress. The long-term objectives of the Center are to implement and evaluate a comprehensive multi-level, multidimensional, and interdisciplinary approach to youth violence prevention.

The accomplishments expected during the next two years of the Center's operation include: 1) Continued technical assistance and evaluation for pilot projects; 2) Initiation of new or expanded projects through external funding sources; 2) Continued development of a surveillance system for intentional injuries and youth violence information; 3) Analysis of data from the longitudinal PRC/YVPC Community Survey; 4) Continued training for students, health professionals and community members; 5) Completion of plans for a community response for youth violence prevention. The YVPC logic model illustrates the Center's projects and processes.

The YVPC is funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
