Master of Health Services Administration (MHSA)

ABOUT THE MHSA DEGREE
The University of Michigan's Master of Health Services Administration (MHSA) is designed to provide a well-rounded, high-quality professional education to gifted, dedicated men and women who aspire to leading positions in the management and planning of health care services.

A wide variety of career opportunities await our graduates. MHSA alumni hold key leadership positions in hospitals, clinics, physician practices,  long-term care facilities, home health care organizations, health insurance companies, health maintenance organizations, complex organizations integrating health care provision and financing, consulting firms, and government agencies.

CURRICULUM AND DEGREE REQUIREMENTS
The MHSA curriculum consists of 60 credit hours, and is designed to provide students with an array of skills that will prepare them for careers in the organization, financing, delivery and management of health care services.  The core curriculum integrates coursework in a variety of disciplines, including economics, epidemiology, law, organizational theory, political science, health services systems, and quantitative skills including accounting and biostatistics.  In addition to the core curriculum, MHSA students are required to take two additional courses:  HMP 606 Managerial Accounting for Health Care Administrators and HMP 607 Corporate Finance for Health Care Administrators.

Through flexibility in the core requirements and electives, students can tailor their coursework to meet their intellectual and career interests.   We suggest that students refer to the MHSA sample curricula for guidance regarding key courses to take given individual interests and career path choices.  Students are free to take elective courses within HMP, the School of Public Health, or at other graduate schools within the University of Michigan (such as the Ross School of Business or the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy).

We strongly believe that students' coursework should not duplicate their existing knowledge or competencies. Therefore, students are encouraged to seek exemptions in areas where they have pre-existing skills and knowledge. This allows students to expand their skills in other areas. In special cases, students will be permitted to make substitutions for the required courses.
